Texas Standoff, is the last of his fictional works in a series about the Texas Rangers.

Review:Grewel
Elmer Kelton died in 2009. During his lifetime he wrote many westerns situated in his native Texas. Texas Standoff is the last of his fictional works in a series about the Texas Rangers.

The story begins simply enough. An anonymous writer has sent a letter to Ranger headquarters, asking the Rangers to investigate vigilante activities where the writer lives. Rangers Andy Pickard and Logan Daggett get the assignment. Although not entirely comfortable with each other, they hit the trail. When they arrive in the area, they learn that tensions between two families--the Teals and the McIntoshes--underlie the trouble brewing in the area.

Pickard and Doggett begin their investigation by getting to know members of each of the families. Additionally, they become familiar with other leading citizens in the area, including an inquisitive newspaper reporter. Not surprisingly, listening to members of each of the families criticize the other in similar fashion, the Rangers suspect that someone else is actually stirring up trouble.

As they view instances of cattle rustling and ambushes of people, the Rangers search for key bits of evidence to indicate the identity of the person or persons causing all the trouble.

Just as they're seemingly making progress in the investigation, Pickard and Doggett receive word that, due to budget cuts, they are being laid off from their jobs as Rangers. That doesn't keep them from discovering the identities of the vigilantes and bringing them to justice. Additionally, they succeed in helping members of the younger generation of Teals and McIntoshes to work together and set aside the animosities that existed between the two families in the past.

In the end, Daggett (who'd been seriously injured shortly after their arrival in the area) married Carrie Teal and landed the job of sheriff in the area. As for Pickard, he returned to his longsuffering wife (who remained at headquarters while he was out on assignment) and informed her they were at last going to build on the land they'd purchased and start ranching for themselves.

In telling the story, Kelton incorporated the usual western scenario of good guys vs. bad guys with the good guys coming out on top in the end.

Global superstar Kelly Clarkson is set to release Greatest Hits Chapter 1 on November 19th

Clarkson witheringly tells an ex “you’re not good enough
World superstar Kelly Clarkson is set to release Greatest Hits Chapter 1 on November 19th. This greatest hits compilation will feature three new tracks from Clarkson as well as a compilation of some of her greatest hits to date. Kelly's new single, "Catch My Breath" is co-written by Clarkson, Jason Halbert and Eric Olson. She states, "This song represents who I've been, what I've felt, and where I'm headed as not only an artist but as a 30 year old that is now smart enough to know that it's time to stop, catch my breath, and be proud of not only what has been accomplished but of all the people that have helped me become the woman I am today." Since bursting onto the music scene 10 years ago, Kelly Clarkson has released 5 studio albums (Thankful, Breakaway, My December, All I Ever Wanted, Stronger), sold over 20 million albums worldwide, 10 million albums in the US and has had 10 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. She is the recipient of 2 Grammy Awards, 4 American Music Awards, 3 MTV Video Music Awards, 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, 1 Country Music Association Award and 12 Billboard Music Awards.
— the first single off Kelly Clarkson’s new album Stronger — Entertainment Weekly calls the multi-platinum singer and songwriter “the samurai of shooting guys down.”

In a story about “Mr. Know It All” — the first single off Kelly Clarkson’s new album Stronger — Entertainment Weekly calls the multi-platinum singer and songwriter “the samurai of shooting guys down.” Indeed Clarkson has earned herself millions of devoted fans thanks to her feisty, straight-talking lyrics. Clarkson’s hits such as “Miss Independent,” “Since U Been Gone,” “Walk Away,” “Never Again,” and now “Mr. Know It All,” are bold empowerment anthems, which she sells to the fullest with her soulful, powerhouse voice and down-to-earth relatability.
The vibrant, musically diverse Stronger (which Clarkson says was influenced by Tina Turner, Prince, Sheryl Crow, and Radiohead) will thrill those who love Clarkson for her resilience. The album is filled with candid, emotionally raw tunes like “The War Is Over,” “Darkside,” and “Honestly,” as well as “You Love Me” (in which Clarkson witheringly tells an ex “you’re not good enough”), “Einstein” (the cad in question is dismissed with “Here’s your keys, your bags, your clothes, and now get out of my place”), and the title track, which finds Clarkson putting a fresh spin Clarkson putting a fresh spin on Nietzsche’s adage that what doesn’t kill youon Nietzsche’s adage that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and declaring “it doesn’t mean I’m over ’cause you’re gone.” That fact that these gutsy sentiments are wrapped in fizzy pop melodies, bright choruses, and driving dancefloor-friendly beats (crafted by such A-list producers as Rodney Jerkins, Greg Kurstin, Josh Abraham, and Toby Gad) only makes them that much more appealing.
“The whole album is very much about strength and empowerment, so ‘Stronger’ felt like the perfect title,” Clarkson says. “Plus that song is just a gold mine — it's a little bit pop, a little bit pop-rock, a little bit urban, a little bit dance, and it ties everything in. And everybody loves that message. ‘What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.’ It's a perfect representation of my life.”
Clarkson’s life has had its share of challenges. Her parents divorced when she was six and her mother struggled financially to raise Kelly and her older siblings. “My mom had to do everything on her own,” Clarkson says. “She put herself through school. It was really hard. I think watching that molded me into this person who wants to relay a message to women everywhere that they’re capable of doing whatever they set their mind to. It made an impact on me even though I didn’t know it at the time. Now I see it while I’m making these songs that I hope will inspire people.”
When Clarkson was in junior high school, a music teacher heard her singing in the hallway and encouraged her to join the choir. She may not have known how her early life would shape her artistry, but Clarkson did understand the emotional power of music from a young age. She was first drawn to singing at age eight after an eye-opening visit to an African-American church in Fort Worth. “I was like, ‘Wow, whatever they're feeling, I want to feel it too,’” she recalls. When Clarkson was in junior high school, a music teacher heard her singing in the hallway and encouraged her to join the choir. “When you’re a kid and you find something you’re good at, you cling to it. People would say nice things and that gave me confidence. Everybody always asks me what I would do if I weren’t singing and I have no clue, because I have no other talents,” she says with a laugh.
As is well known by now, Kelly Clarkson first appeared on the public’s radar in 2002 during the first season of American Idol. “When I auditioned, my apartment in Los Angeles had recently burned down and I had a box of photographs to my name,” Clarkson says. “I figured I’d get to sing and make some money to pay the bills. Nobody thought that show was going to be what it is now.” Of course Clarkson won and went on to become an international pop icon, selling over 20 million albums worldwide (including 10 million in the U.S.) and notching seven singles on the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She has released four studio albums, 2003’s double-platinum No. 1 Thankful, 2004’s 6x-platinum Breakaway (which sold over 12 million copies worldwide, spawned five Top 10 hits, and stayed on the charts for two years), 2007’s platinum-selling My December, and 2009’s All I Ever Wanted, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and produced the smash singles “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Already Gone.” Clarkson has also received two Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, two MTV Music Awards, and 11 Billboard Music Awards.
With all those accolades, it’s tempting to wonder why Clarkson is continually drawn to songs about overcoming challenges. “I think I gravitate toward songs with a defiant message because I always feel like I’m fighting just to be me,” she says. “That’s why I tend to write or choose songs about how just being you is okay. People associate me with break-up songs, but most of the time the song isn’t even about a guy. I never write about one particular thing. I always relate the topic to different situations in my life, whether it’s family, friends, or work. That’s what makes the songs connect on a broader level.”
Clarkson co-wrote five tracks on Stronger, a process she feels is therapeutic. Her favorite song on the album is “You Love Me,” which she says she wrote following an incident that she thought would break her. “It was probably the most hurt I’ve ever been in my life,” she admits. “But by writing about it, I got to work through it and get it out of my system.” The remainder of the songs were written by a host of A-list songsmiths, including Rodney Jerkins, Ester Dean, Bonnie McKee, and Toby Gad, whom Clarkson says really took the time to get to know her style. She also credits her producers, Jerkins, Kurstin, Abraham, and Gad among them, for what she says is the biggest difference between Stronger and her previous albums.
“What separates this album are the vocals,” she says. “They sound richer and fuller, and, for the first time, how I sound when I’m performing live. The producers I worked with just let me sing and be me. They didn't strip away the personality. And it was one of those things where if the people I’m working with have confidence in me, I have more confidence in myself and that changed everything. I can’t wait to perform these songs on tour. I think that’s the best way to get to know an artist, and where you get to see actual personality, because we can't hide much onstage.”
And how does she think her fans around going to react to Stronger? “I have an indication that they know they're going to love it,” she says. “I ran into a fan the other day in Target. It was a mom and her daughter and they were just like, ‘Oh my God, we don't even care what you put out if you could just put something out.’ It's funny, they didn’t even care what it was. I love that people still get excited about new music.”

The songs are:

2. My Life Would Suck Without You (3:31)
3. Miss Independent (3:34)
4. Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) (3:42)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Review:SteveMar
A hymn to boyhood: I can think of no better way sum up Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Written in 1876, this is one of those rare books that does not date. The author has created a brilliant portrayal of boys, their approach to the world, the way they think and their priorities. The book is written in such a sparkling, light, humorous way that it reads as freshly today as it ever did.So, who is Tom Sawyer. Whilst Mark Twain has created a very real character, the book works because Tom is a composite containing aspects of every boy you have ever met. He is lazy; he is dis organised; he would rather do anything than sit in school, learning; he engages in an eternal round of swapping trinkets with his friends. Tom Sawyer is a double-edged sword. His spontaneity causes him to be in constant trouble, but it also a spontaneity fuelled by a joy of life. He may hate dusty, old books, but he has boundless affection for people. He may get into fights, but he also has a passionate loyalty to his friends. Tom Sawyer is such a wonderful creation that I could happily read about his day-to-day activities without need of a plot.Despite the dominance of Tom, himself, and the picaresque picture of the village and characters among whom he lives, there is a plot. The plot itself is as traditional as it possible to get. All those spoofs of children’s story – the children overhearing the villains discussing buried treasure etc – are here. However, although the plot is, to modern eyes, archaic and the coincidences and unlikelihoods upon which the plot is based seem too contrived, this shouldn’t put anyone off reading Tom Sawyer. It is the sheer ffirmation of life and portrayal of boyhood which make this novel a timeless classic.

Oblivion, Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman

"Oblivion" - Starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman

Review:RadioFerg92
"Oblivion", Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy), and starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko, has all the ingredients you'd expect from an early-summer Hollywood blockbuster movie. Action, brilliant special effects, an all star cast.

Set in the year 2077 on a war-torn, desolate future Earth, Jack Harper (Cruise) lives in the sky, acting as repair man/security guard for the drones that protect massive machines, used to collect sea water to convert into power. The human race has evacuated to Titan, after a devastating war with an alien race known as the Scavengers. However after Harper investigates a crashed escape pod from an old spaceship, the arrival of a familiar woman heralds danger - and the realization that things may not be as they appear.

From the outset, "Oblivion" is visually stunning; sweeping wide-shots of an abandoned Earth open the film, with a voice over from Cruise setting the scene. The bleak and sparse colour palette, coupled with the minimalist production-design give the film a striking visual style. This style works perfectly with the music - a magnificent epic electronic symphony from M83.

The music is without a doubt one of - if the not THE most impressive aspect to the film. It completely drives the movie, and is probably the reason I enjoyed it as much as I did.

What is lacking, sadly, is the story. While the film sets up an interesting premise, the sci-fi cliches keep coming as the movie progresses - so much so that the ending is easily predicted half way through the film. This lack of story really brought what was otherwise a very good science-fiction film down several marks for me, and is characteristic of Kosinski's other works, most notably "Tron: Legacy".

Despite this, the film is a must for science-fiction fans, and is worth at least one viewing for everyone else.

6/10

Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou?will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one.

Letters To Juliet

When aspiring magazine writer Sophia Marcus and would-be resaturanteur Victor fly from New York to Italy for a vacation, the stage seems set for some much-needed romance in their relationship - especially since their destination is the city of Verona, home of the star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet of Romeo & Juliet fame. But Victor is far more interested in finding suppliers for his future restaurant than in wooing Sophia, who ends up getting a vicarious romantic fix from an unlikely source; she jions a group of volunteers who respond to letters that pour into Verona from around the world - letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. One such letter that Sophia responds to dates back to 1951 and came from one Claire Smith, an Englishwoman who fell in love with a young Italian man in her youth but let the opportunity slip away. To Sophia's surprise, her letter inspires Claire, now a grandmother, to travel to Verona in search of her long-lost love - accompanied by her grandson Charlie. With Victor wrapped up in his culinary quest, Sophia, Charlie and Claire scour the beautiful Italian countryside in search of Claire's long-lost love. In the process, romance blossoms in unexpected ways, eventually facing Sophia with the very advice she wrote in her letter to Claire. The true story of Richard Phillips, "Captain Phillips", Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi

Captain Phillips
Tom Hanks
B00HYTSTNU

The true story of Richard Phillips, the cargo-ship captain who surrendered himself to a group of Somali pirates so that his crew would be freed, is adapted by screenwriter Billy Ray in this Paul Greengrass-directed docudrama starring Tom hanks.

The story begins introducing us to Captain Richard "Rich" Phillips and humanizes him through a discussion with his wife about their children. Within a few minutes, we're taken to a small village in Somalia where a band thugs arrives to pressure the locals into going back to the work of hijacking Marine Vessel and returning their cargo to the regional warlords where the ship is then ransomed back to the owners.

After a failed attempt to board the Maersk Alabama the pirates rejoin their mother ship and repair their boat and add a second engine to help the skiff catch the larger, more powerful Vessel. The Crew users flairs, high pressure water hoses, a series of 30 degree turns in an attempt to fend off the pirates but, all their efforts fail as the ship is boarded and the skiff is sunk. The crew then goes into a series of rehearsed procedures in which most of them hide in the engine room where they take control of the ship and shut it down

Gravity, official thrillel

Astronauts Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalski are on a routine spacewalk when disaster strikes. Their shuttle is destroyed leaving them alone in space - tethered to nothing but each other.

  Sandra Bullock, George Clooney
Ed Harris, Orto Ignatiussen, Phaldut Sharma, Amy Warren, Basher Savage, Janis Ahern

The story opens with a George Clooney voice-over. We meet astronauts working to repair a satellite. This shows how calm such a silent world can be. I reluctantly saw the movie in 3D, but this was one occasion that I came away feeling that it added to the experience. It almost made me dizzy seeing Ryan Stone (Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (Clooney) go about their routine business with Earth looming large in the background. Indeed, the cinematography was breathtaking throughout the 90 minutes.
