When my mother's water broke, she didn't panic—nor did she immediately head to the hospital. Instead, she sat at her vanity and carefully applied her Fashion Fair makeup (at the time, the brand was one of the few options available to Black women). As a Trinidadian and Tobagonian, looking her best was not just a sense of pride or a form of self-expression, but an obligation. She instilled in me the importance of Black beauty from a young age. This Black History Month—and every month!—I encourage allies to the Black community to shop Black and make a Black-owned product a staple in your beauty routine. Here are my current favorites.
