Where editors share their weekly musings on pop culture—and recommend what to watch, read, and listen to right now. This week, we discuss the Golden Globe nominations and Heated Rivalry. |
|
|
| Erica Gonzales, deputy editor, digital content: One Battle After Another is looking like the film to beat this season. (That is, maybe until Marty Supreme comes out this Christmas?) It earned nine Golden Globe nominations this morning, after its Gotham Awards win, Critics Choice nominations, and National Board of Review honors. I think it's well-deserved, and I love seeing Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor get their acting nods too! |

| Lauren Puckett-Pope, culture writer: Totally agree. It'll be fascinating to see what Marty Supreme adds to the conversation once it's in theaters. But as we know, buzz doesn't always translate to awards recognition. Did you catch that Sinners was the third most nominated film on the list? I love seeing a good vampire movie get its due. |

Erica: Agree! Michael B. Jordan definitely deserves the nod for his dual role, but I wish his female co-stars got their flowers too. One thing I was elated to see, though, was Park Chan-Wook's No Other Choice land beyond the non-English-language category, reaching the Best Picture and Best Actor races. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it! Lauren: Yes! When I was at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, that movie was right up there with Hamnet (a six-time Golden Globe nominee) as one of the most talked-about films of the program. On the TV front, I was thrilled to see Apple TV's excellent new sci-fi drama Pluribus get a nomination for Best Television Series, even after only having premiered in November.
Erica: We also have to talk about the new Golden Globes category: Best Podcast. The nominees include no-brainers like Call Her Daddy, Smartless, and Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. Lauren: Ironically, several of the people nominated in that category are actors: Amy Poehler, Dax Shephard, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett…maybe they can just record their podcasts on the red carpet this time. |

George Clooney stars as a veteran, capital-M movie star with a million-dollar smile and a repertoire of box-office bangers (sound familiar?) in Noah Baumbach's latest film. Clooney was well-cast as the titular Jay as he ventures to Italy to receive a lifetime achievement award and confront his past mistakes—from his shady start in acting to his shortcomings as a father—along the way. Our leading man is charming as ever here, but my personal favorite performance was Adam Sandler's. Don't miss it!—EG |

There was a day last week when almost everyone I encountered, whether in the office or via text, was talking about Heated Rivalry. It's easy to see why: The smutty Canadian TV series (airing on HBO Max in the U.S.) follows a hot enemies-to-lovers romance between two rival hockey players, but...let's just say there's barely any hockey. With reactions to the jaw-dropping sex scenes taking over social media, we went straight to the intimacy coordinator for an inside look at how she crafted the bedroom shots and helped the actors feel safe. Last week, HBO dropped the official trailer for its new Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. As is (almost) always the case with page-to-screen adaptations, I recommend you read the book if you want to fully appreciate—and, in some cases, comprehend—Martin's richly layered fantasy world. (I'd also suggest you start reading soon, should you aim to be prepared by the time the premiere rolls around on Jan. 18, 2026!) The book version of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms combines Martin's three prequel novellas—The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight—and acts as your official primer for HBO's next phase of GoT.—LPP |

WHAT YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO: |
If you feel yourself settling into the winter blues, JADE has an anthem to keep you going. The former Little Mix star, who broke out with a debut album earlier this summer, just released a deluxe edition that includes this upbeat track about escaping your troubles with the help of dance music. Her lyrics capture a very relatable feeling of desperation: "I'm a little depressed and you're a little bit torn / I just wanna de-stress here on the dance floor." And the infectious beat definitely drives her point home. Revisit our interview with JADE below.—EG |

In ELLE's latest episode of Phoning It In, a video series where celebrities prank-call their friends, comedian Matt Rogers targeted his bestie and Las Culturistas co-host Bowen Yang, accusing him of inappropriately texting his partner. Poor Bowen was shocked, of course, and rushed to pull up his Instagram DMs…in desktop mode. When Matt finally came clean, Bowen jokingly scolded him for the embarrassment of resorting to a web browser.—EG |
