Now that we're midway through 2025, there's no better time to reflect on what this year has brought us in television. From lovable comedies like Hacks to moving sci-fi dramas like Andor, here are the best series we've watched so far this year. And as a culture editor who spends most of her free time watching TV and movies, I have to say our recommendations are must-watches. (I also want to echo my colleagues' recs of Overcompensating and The Rehearsal.)
However, if you're looking for a love story on the big screen, treat your inner romantic to Materialists, the latest from Past Lives director Celine Song. The A24 film has the staff buzzing: our digital deputy editor Madi Feller can't stop raving about the wardrobe, while staff culture writer Lauren Puckett-Pope has some thoughts on the Team Pedro vs. Team Chris debate. (Watch this space.)
Read our interview with Song below, plus a few more stories for your pop culture fix: the enduring legacy of Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill; the rise of Filipino nurses onscreen; and the Sabrina Carpenter album everyone has an opinion about.
