It was a dream to collaborate with Sofia Coppola as a guest editor of ELLE's 2026 Women of Impact portfolio. It's something we do annually in our April issue to honor women who are using their platforms for good—but this year, thanks to Coppola, the list feels distinctly cooler. Below you'll find a conversation between Coppola and her friend Kim Gordon, the Sonic Youth frontwoman/visual artist/X-Girl designer who released a new album just last week. As Véronique Hyland discovered, cool does not mean disaffected. "Listening to Play Me, I found myself thinking about how refreshing it is to hear a 'cool' person express rage, anger, and discomfort. And while Coppola's emotional temperature is on the softer end of the spectrum, her films also have a distinct feminist bent." We're excited to celebrate these artists' work and their powerful impact on our world. —Sara Austin, executive editor |
